Tadao Ando

To experience the work of Tadao Ando is both arresting and eerily serene.

He balances the austerity of right angles with emptiness and simple geometry. There is no artistic indulgence. There is no excess. He creates concrete skeletons: inanimate structures which are brought to life through inhabitance and interaction. Oppressive in their severity, mesmerizing in their purity.

Tadao Ando (born 13 September 1941) is a Japanese autodidact architect. He is the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.
